ANOMALY – SUNDAY, APRIL 18 1:30PM
Barack Obama’s presidency has brought conversations on racial identity to the forefront. ANOMALY is a groundbreaking documentary film that takes an insider’s look at the experiences of multiracial Americans. Through personal narratives, ANOMALY stimulates viewers to think about identity, family and community in a changing world.
The film features interviews and performances by singer/songwriter Gabriella Callender, spoken word artist Michelle Myers, musician/poet Pete Shungu, and author Thaddeus Rutkowski, along with community leaders and academic experts.
Director Jessica Chen Drammeh and Producer Sharon K. Smith, joined by a representative from the MAVIN Foundation will speak after the screening. The MAVIN Foundation serves mixed heritage people and families, including those who identify as biracial, mixed race, multiracial, multiethnic, transracial and transnational adoptees, and people in interracial relationships. Based in Seattle, MAVIN is committed to building stronger communities by supporting mixed heritage people and families, working for social justice and raising awareness about the complexities of race, racism, and identity.
Preceded by the short films STEPS, directed by Barney Cheng and THE LUCKY SUIT, directed by Roy Clovis.
STEPS: A young girl, abandoned as an infant, reflects about the steps people take each day and wonders what could have happened to her is a stranger had never “stepped” in her direction.
THE LUCKY SUIT: A series of individual actions within a community help an individual on the path to success.
